    Tank go boom.

    Today at the field it was pouring rain (don't know why anyone came out). Man is walking down the stairs, slips gun goes flying, tank sheers off at the threads. That is all. Just thought I'd put it out there.

      Their is a reason oil and air tank safety is so stressed. It really is that easy to get you or others killed if it explodes.

              You can't. If someone puts oil in the fill nipple bad things will happen the next time it's filled.

              The burst disks offer some safety but it's not a guarantee by any means

                    I don't think that would do anything. The actual bottom part of the bonnet stayed on the tank. It was the asa threads that came off (remaining in the gun).

                      I mean in your specific case theres really not much you can do. The reg was sheered off. If you release the gas more rapidly it's an even bigger bang, if you release it more slowly you are running the risk of the tank turning into a rocket.

                          So question many of the at home small air compressors have filters that are supposed to keep oil and water out of the tank. But they are not very effective. How come none of those tanks go boom? It is Basicaly 2 stroke oil if I recall correctly.

                            Correct, you have to buy a separate water and oil filter machine if you are gonna do home fills this way.

                              We use one in tahoe with the stock “separator” it didn’t work well s you do end up with som oil in the tanks but they don’t go boom lol

                            I'm gonna toss a guess in that the pump is compressing the air before injecting it into the tank, so the oil water that is in the pump is being compressed by the pump, not in the tank.
                            Oil in the tank itself would be subject to the compressed air forced into the tank, building the pressure required to ignite the oil.
                            So, the mix in the pump during compression will build heat, but not combust, as it is already compressed.

                              Yah you end up with both in the tank. I’m mainly wondering why after I run the air out and refill at the field it dosnt go boom there has to be some residual oil. I assume. I need to pull my reg and check it out actualy.
                              If you just dump the air from the tank you can see the oil on a white sheet of paper.

                              Right, the oil in the compressed gas inside the tank is probably suspended in the air (being compressed). The oil/water is vented out with the air.
                              There is probably a critical limit where there is enough oil inside a tank to ignite from the heat generated during a fill.

                              I think the difference between oil being introduced by the pump in the compressed state, and someone squeezing a few drops of oil into the fill nipple is A Whole Lot. The oil from the pump is only particles, while the bad option is actual oil.
