What reball-hopper combos work best? I bought some unbranded reballs a while back and they don’t consistently feed even through a gravity hopper (Empire Splitter).

I’ve had good luck with a Spire IR and revvy. I’ve heard that rotors specifically don’t like reball.

How difficult would it be to make a chrono station muffler?

Like a 2'-3' section of 4" PVC vented leech line, wrapped in a towel, with a removable cap on one end, and a mount for a handheld chrono on the other?

I need something that would muffle the shot signature enough to prevent my neighbors from calling the cops.

I don't need a target range for accuracy, but the ability to test velocity at home would be awesome.

I live in a relatively urban environment with a small back yard facing a road. We have a small fire pit that I put shipping totes (plastic bins) in and then take 5 gallon buckets and stack them inside to shoot into. The paint drips out the bottom into the fire pit but most of the shell stays in the buckets and totes. Before taking a shot, I make sure the street is empty.

I called our city police before ever firing a ball to make sure they were alright with it. Neighbors don't seem to care.

Spire, basically any of them.

I can confirm this, tried my rotor, you will get like 4 or 5 shots then it jams up. If you are not needing to shoot a stream of paint it's easier to just single feed them.

Also, traffic cone + reballs = death

I figured they would bounce around and drop though the end, no, they rebound and come back at you

Have you tried putting a stopping fabric in front of the cone? I was just thinking this sounded like a good idea but now I'm second-guessing it. I have lots of reball experience and definitely know they bounce and maintain high velocity!

I've got a bucket with an old sheet stuffed loosely inside. Also a towel to dry fire the barrel into, quiets it really well.
If you just want to test functionality you don't even need a barrel, assuming the detent is on the body. Essentially no velocity shooting like this so you can easily catch paintballs in a towel.

I'm also rural so for actual testing I have a huge piece of double back hard foam I rest up against a tree. Stick a target on it and shoot that.

I kind of stole your idea. I had some sleeves from a jean jacket hanging around. (I liked the material and thought I might use it on something else). I emptied out a plastic rubbermaid storage tote and on one of the short sides, attached both sleeves about 3 inches apart with the inseam cut. Works perfectly. I have a furnace access in my place that has a little bit of storage and I can crouch into. Regular cheap paintballs don't actually break on the jean material or in the tote! I'm just curious what it sounds like outside of the little room.

Glad it's working well for you. I like glaman5266's traffic cone idea, I think that would work well behind the denim to catch more of the balls better. I will have to find a large traffic cone when I move to my new place.

Years ago I built a 16"x16"x16" plywood box and hung sheets of screen material in it to catch the spray. Had feet on the front to angle it up towards me. Worked pretty well. Wouldn't do it indoors, though.

I set something up in my large shed for testing / chrono'ing purposes. A large rubbermaid garbage can turned on it's side, I packed the can with lots of old crumbled up newsprint, flyers, etc to absorb broken paint, then to deal with splatter and bouncebacks (i'm shooting point blank into this setup) i got some heavy duty card board and hang it over the opening, duct tape it down, and i just cut a small port to place my barrel through. Nothing fancy, but its made for a handy little chrono station.

If I want to shoot a few in the backyard, I luckily back onto a commercial area, and there is about 20 feet of mature trees, brush and then an 8 foot fence separating the 2 properties. I have a couple targets I setup there such as a dead ninja bottle I have hanging up, and then also I scored an old recalled brass eagle fish bowl z leader mask in a lot one time, since its unsafe to use i have it setup as another target. Any missed shots either break up in the brush, or hit that wooden fence.

I usually make sure to check that my immediate neighbors are not outside so as not to freak them out. I'm not worried about other neighbors calling cops as I assume they'll attribute the noise to business commercial side we all back onto. Also we have a ton of tear down, rebuild construction going on in my neighborhood , so at any given time i figure someone likely thinks the noise I am making is a roofing nail gun.

I built a set of swinging targets for the backyard using PVC, chain, and plywood. I live in a rural area, so neighbors aren't much of a concern. Besides, the neighbors further up on the hill are known to shoot real steel and set off Tannerite in their backyard. I'm far from the noisiest person around here when I target shoot.

I have a large ish backyard and neighbors that don't care as far as the sound is concerned, not that it's ever very loud. But I always shoot towards by owner house. At a tree, but the over-spray is insane so this thread has given me some good ideas for something to do in the garage instead.
