Are box mags REALLY magfed? I disagree

So all MFOG I've been to allow box mags, the Dye Box Rotor and the MCS Box Mag. Also, none have allowed the mag hopper adapter, like the ones made by Sgt Nards and Paintball DNA. Now I do not think there is really a fundamental difference between the two. They both feed from the bottom through the magwell. They are both force feeding roundball from large capacity containers. The Dye Box Rotor is exactly that: a rotor in a box. The MCS is a BT RIP Clip in a box. Why allow those but not a rotor with a magwell adapter? Is it just looks? If so, no infantry carry weapon I'm aware of uses a box feed. All box fed real steel I'm aware of is squad carry. Or mounted. Just curious. I'll never use a box mag myself. Kinda defeats the purpose of MFOG in my opinion. I'll probably pick up a hopper mag adapter for long scenario games. Or put the stock hopper on my MG. But the hopper mag adapter does keep the vertical profile nicely low. Kind of curious how it affects the balance, especially on such a lightweight marker as the MG100 (compared to other magfed markers) I'm interested in other players opinions. Roast away! But please be civil lol.

In my mind magfed by its very nature is limited paint. Once you step away from that everything seems to break down into milsim cosplay. Not hating if that’s what you’re into, but if it isn’t limited paint it’s not for me.

They aren't... But I'll argue that a qloader is.

You can't open up a q-loader and dump in a pod, so I'll agree with you.

By every conceivable definition, a q-loader qualifies.

The whole concept of a magazine is that it's removed when empty, these are refilled, therefore not magazines

If you allow these, you should basically allow any hopper that is mounted anywhere that is not in top of a feedneck

So I can roll up with a warp feed RT mag and it would be considered "mag feed"

Unless you want to put a cap on the amount of paint, the q loader should also be in this as it is removed and must be filled off the field. Higher capacity yes but still does everything a "magazine" does

I think maybe the PbDNA adapter/ rotor combo doesn’t fit into the Larp’ing theme of a MFOG type game, so is rejected by game organizers?

For me magfed need to be limited paint format. Anything over 30 or 40 bal per mag is no longer magfed
            so qloader is not magfed

Going back to real steel, I think both Calico ( https://calicofirearms.com/product/9...carbine-rifle/ ) and Surefire ( https://www.surefire.com/categories/...ity-magazines/ )would disagree with that limit.

What about those 50 round hoppers? Are they small enough to be in the spirit of magfed?

Yes to everything that you've said.

I wrote a whole rant on this, but then decided not to post it. Anyway, many organizers probably don't allow warp adapters because of the look, but it also could be because of the accessibility to box mags these offer. If they don't have ratio limits (ie 1 box mag per x number of players) or have no system to enforce the ratio then it becomes easier for far too many players with normal magfed guns to slap these onto whatever (these are designed for a number of different magwells) and just overwhelm the field. It's far easier for them to look at a gun and see if it's good to go on the field than have to make special rules for boxmags and make a class ID system and keep track of who has what. The MCS box mag sucks and the DYE boxrotor is prohibitively expensive and fairly limited in how it can be used.

I have a warp adapter. Definitely odd at first. Mine had some issues but was pretty easy to fix. Lots of slop in the magwells out of the box, but you can use tape to fix that. Also an issue with the detent spring that stops the balls from flying out if you eject it. You will probably want a vertical grip for it too because you can't hold onto the magwell with this installed.

I've never understood why the organizers demand the guns look realistic. They don't have any kind of uniform requirement. You can show up in full tourney gear so long as you have a magfed gun they deem realistic. Look at the pictures and you'll see people larping various things that make no sense together. Superheroes, hitmen, transformers, Viet Cong, special forces.

Also, last time I checked soldiers don't go into battle with randos they just met who may or may not have any kind of training or tactical prowess. And no chain of command.

They're just limited paint big games.

Still a hopper, you don't remove it and replace it with a new one when you are empty

If you want to have a mag feed game at your local field the rules on what is a "mag" need to be fairly tight, in a big game they can be a little more loose

I've always gone by, "if you remove it and replace it, it's a mag" rule, for a small game though you would also want to add a paint cap to that so one player with a q loader can't dominate by slinging paint. In a big game that will probably not make as much of a difference though

Yeah, it totally depends on the goal.

Is the goal a LARP game based on modern warfare? Everyone would need to sit back not shooting each other, and occasionally call in fire support. Yawn. Who cares what you're shooting.

Is the goal a Hollywood Vietnam style squad warfare with "heavy" guys carrying mounted weapons that they don't need to mount because they're so badass? Then 4 magfed 30 round players for every boxmag/hopper/predator can make sense (but I've noticed nobody ever places such common sense restrictions).

Is the goal just a form of limited paint? Then boxmags should be banned and a clear definition developed. "max 30 rounds per load, marker must not shoot when magazine is not attached, any alternative setups like stick feed or pump shotguns may be allowed if they are judged to have less than or equal firepower than a regular magfed, with decisions being made on a case by case basis"

Yea that's not magfed in the true sense of the word. Magfed by definition should be limited paint with an actual magazine that only holds a few rounds. This setup that's in the OP or things like the Dye DAM Boxmag are just milsim cosplay as Jonnydread pointed out.

I agree with your disagreeing. It’s a hopper on the bottom instead of the top.
