New Mag Fed Trend - Eating Paint!??

I was checking out other albums of the Photog who was at our Mag Fed / Limited paint game this past weekend (great photographer by the way, and very involved in Ontario paintball!) ...so free shoutout!

Anyhow, in an another album ( https://sheldoncarlessphotography.sh...lery/17852678/ ) from a MFOG game at PRZ , I noticed a trend among some of the players, and wondered if you guys are seeing this too in the US?

Basically , the Paintball upper goggles are being paired up with Airsoft lowers!

Of course, not every player had this setup, but enough to make me notice. Here are a few examples:

I guess the breathability is more important than eating paint for these guys!??

I wonder if these guys were airsofters first and just never bothered to switch.

I ate enough paint through a pair a profilers. The mesh bottoms seem nice, but I'll pass.

Yeah man I love my Profilers, but they did feed me plenty of paint throughout the years.

A lot of fields in the US would not allow it due to liability ...

Ive seen field refuse to have player use their OG flex because of the "hole" behind the strap "it is unsafe because paint can come though and hit you in the eye" (BS if you ask me ...)

I occasionally play magfed, more of a SC/pump guy. I have NEVER seen this on the field and most of the fields I attend would not allow this for paintball play. I get enough paint in my mouth using full-sized paintball masks, I don't need the help!

It looks like the 3rd guy isn't even wearing approved paintball goggles. Can't say I've ever seen those before...

I have seen several guy playing like this at my local indoor field. They are usually all milsim player that are in a team and they usually use proshield mask without the lower and use those mesh grill.
as for the other google they look like ballistic google like the one from Revision military, they are not cheaper than a mask...
Revision Military builds high-performance ballistic & laser protective eyewear solutions for the evolving needs of the modern soldier.

In really rare ocasion (maybe only 1 or 2 times ) I have even seen a player playing without the lower part of the mask entirely... (here the regulation seem to be only the eye protection is mandatory to play)

I see photos of guys in Quebec wear mesh bottoms all the time, but usually it's with JT goggles. I've seen people play with the Tippmann branded production version of that combo as well.

I would have serious reservations about shooting at anybody wearing anything else unless I had personally confirmed they were ballistic goggles (ie Revision). Pretty sure airsoft goggles meet the same standards as paintball goggles, but that's assuming it's a brand name.

We had a stupid “trend” out west where guys would only wear the googles and no lower mask. Remember playing a big game and seeing several people doing that. This was a decade or more ago, but really stupid. Guess it went with guys rolling up their flex bottoms.

Not field legal anywhere where I play... and I'm a "special lot"

Everyone always goes for the goggle shot, I would not rely on metal mesh to protect me from an FSR to the chin.

Yeahhhh not gonna lie if I saw someone douche-aggin' like that I'd probably aim right for the mouth.

All pro players for years would use goggles only, no mask at all. Some would wear ear protection.

Those mesh lowers look plenty protected safe compared to floppy rubber masks, as long as they hold up to getting beaned. Getting spray in the face well, I get that from mask vents on normal paintball masks anyways.

But that is definitely airsoft gear, and I agree that guy number 3 looks like hes got some cheezball airsoft goggles on.

The reason airsoft and milsim / magfed guys use those lowers is because they are low profile enough that they don't interfere with a cheekweld so much. They have rifle stocks that get in the way of a traditional mask.

You gotta use a dye i4 (super low profile, high jaw line) or a rolled up JT flex mask to make it work with a paintball mask. Or a flex IZE with rubbery super soft bottom.

I went woodsballing last weekend and have seen at least 3-4 modified masks with the mouth area cut out and replaced with mesh. I guess eating paint is less likely if there is literally no cover on the field where i could sit comfortable enough that only my head and gun are visible. I also realized that i hate shooting through brush. Somehow the engagement distance is higher but my effective range is crippled.

I've cut the cheeks out of Proshield bottoms, used custom mesh bottoms, and run goggles-only.

I wouldn't do goggles-only anymore because of lip shots, but cheeks and jaws aren't too bad. Mesh is far more breathable than anything else I've tried, so it has its advantages beyond just being low-profile. You definitely eat more paint, though. Cutting out proshield bottoms is an easy way to get most of the low profile performance without doing much custom work.

In my opinion (and not the ASTM's), Eyes and ear protection are mandatory - don't skimp there. Lips are a high priority because getting smacked there just hurts. Jaw and cheeks aren't that big a deal if you don't mind weird welts.

I know for a fact my local field (much like pretty much any legit field) won't allow you to play with this setup. I bet a paintball would dent the crap out of the mesh.
