    NPPL revival?

Forum and Site dedicated to old and rare paintball guns, the players, and those that just love the game

    New website.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Paintball is where it is for many reasons, but the lack of 7man semi isn't the reason. The entertainment market, the paintball industry, and even the culture are vastly different to what they were in '06, and you can't just up and expect the same things to work. Look back for ideas, sure, but if their entire business model is based on nostalgia they are guaranteed to fail.

Well, maybe they're going to take a different angle than the NXL. Maybe they're going to have something that the NXL doesn't or is going to have a different business model. We don't really know yet, judging by how bare bones the website currently is. I can't find anything on a quick Google search either. So who knows.

I agree with you (I'll believe it when I see it), but if this is indeed different & it takes off I'll take that as a sign that paintball is getting bigger again. Cautious optimism, I guess. I'll withhold judgement until more comes to light.

That dude on Instagram, willballforsoup, seems to think some guy from Push named Mark Knop is behind it? He also seems to think their first event (if there is ever one), is going to be a revival of the Huntington Beach event. Of course it is all just speculation on his part it seems.

I've heard this is a new professional Gel Blaster league.

Mark was behind the last attempted revival that never got off the ground I believe. No idea if this is a continuation of that or what. He also lives in like...?Croatia? or some Eastern European country now, so I feel like that can't help when trying to launch a new US based league.

I will believe it when I see it. HB today is not the HB of yesteryear. I have zero desire to travel to CA probably get tetanus and TB just walking the beach now.

Geez it hasn’t changed that much the whole coast down there is moneybags city I was shocked being from Cali but not spending much time in SoCal beaches

But I agree. We don’t need another regular high rof paintball league because that version of the sport is not the meta version of the sport. Stock class would be, which high level ninja skills like you see in gymnastics and other kinda unpopular sports coming to be tiktok or Instagram worthy or something.

I think I’d be nice to see a pro level pump tourney series.

We have the electros covered. And mechs getting recognition again. But pumps not seen the pro level since before I got into the game.

I remember going to sky ball (spectating) and the crazy thing was one team was running pumps. I remember thinking man they are crazy but soo cool.

I personally LOVE playing pump. I only really play pump and Mech. And I honestly can’t remember a time I went to a field and didn’t play pump at some point in the day.

Think it would be fun to see some with actual skill play the game at a top level

AGD 68 Automag, AGD ULE 68 Automag, Azodin KPII, Tippmann SL68II, Umarex TR50.

Agreed a pro level pump league would be interesting.

An idea a bunch of us had a while back was to start the leagues like D5 with higher ROF then by the time you get to the pro level you're playing stock class. Silly but I think it'd be interesting.

In order to be "pro" you need people watching and following along. I just can't see pump pulling eyeballs. Mech probably looks and plays too much like electro to be seen by average joe as any different, magfed could work maybe for the Fortnite/CoD vibes, but pump would come across as "those guns aren't as cool". I wish it wasn't so.

I'd love to see someone run an Astra invitational style event with some decent money on the line and all the pro teams, but switch up the gear and format to see how the teams cope with pump etc.

I tend to disagree. By nature paintball is not a great spectator sport. One thing that helps it be watchable is slowing it down a tad and emphasizing movement. And pump is a great way to do that.

Mag fed would do a similar thing but could draw unnecessary bad press with the current realism of the guns.

While a bright splash sniper or phantom looks amazing, stands out and is interesting it, does not look like your playing GI joe.

NPPL died out because it wasn't the best option. The events I played in weren't the greatest playing experience IMO.

I had tons of fun and met lots of cool people off the field though. Things could get nuts. Lockout and GZ's speedball grudge match in the motel parking lot at Pittsburgh. I'm watching TV and paint starts breaking on the window. Owner on checkout "paintball players, no more welcome".

If I were running it I'd start with two main styles - pump, and (yep) magfed speedball. I think magfed is easier to market and appeal to newbies vs pump. You've got the whole CoD/Fortnite vibe that magfed speedball naturally has.

If I bothered with an electronic division it would be something quite different to the NXL. Zone capture, payload, respawns, whatever but definitely not standard elimination.

UWL and it's predecessor SPPL had that format, with SPPL having more rules and class based things as well as allowing for rockets and stuff if I rememeber right.

                That's right.

Gotta KISS sometimes, class based and complex rules work well in video games but the admin/ref load IRL is a bit much for this market.
