I found heating the solder up and then just using a putty knife to gently scrape it off worked pretty good to remove most of it. Solder braid would also work. Just remember solder won't stick well to a surface that isn't hot, so heat the solder and push it away from the heated surface and it will stop sticking and you should be able to pick it off with your fingers.

To keep my tubes together I used locking pliers, I just made sure to only have them just barely tight enough to hold the piece together as I didn't want to mark the brass.
