The LPR (low pressure regulator) is used to cock the gun; it's one of the components of the front block, with the small hoses. The HPR (high pressure regulator...the one that goes into your vertical ASA) lowers pressure from the tank so that the hammer can open the valve enough to let sufficient amounts of air through.

The problem with the regulator you have right now is that to adjust the pressure, you have to take off the fitting at the bottom and that's where you can insert an Allen wrench to adjust it, whereas other regulators have more accessible adjustment mechanisms.
