I need help getting started

Hello,

I am looking to start my first 3d printing project and I am probably over complicating it for myself. I want to create a custom pump handle for my pump. Simon posted the files so I have a starting point, now I just want to modify the design a bit and then have it printed.

What are some good applications to use for modifying existing files (stl format) and then having them printed?

If you have any questions let me know.

Thank you

Welcome to 3D printing!!

I think most CAD platforms have a way of accomplishing what you want. The trick is converting the STL to a modifiable object.

Fusion360 (which seems to be pretty prevalent here in MCB) is capable of doing this by importing the STL as a mesh, then converting to a solid with the Mesh-to-BRep function. I haven't really done anything extensive with this operation, so still a lot to learn.

You pretty much can't go wrong with Fusion360. Pretty powerful, feature rich, able to share projects with others, and free for hobbyists.

Rainmaker... We need to talk... I have been attempting to get an STL into a usable object in Fusion360 for a very long time... Please point me to a write up/video/create a write up... As this has vexed me for a while.

I do not have any tubing for sale, nor will I be restocking. Once more, sorry.

I had to learn the hard way, pulling from a few different resources to find the path I really wanted.

But I recently found this site that sums it up into a few simple steps:

https://toglefritz.com/convert-a-sim...in-fusion-360/

If your object is overly complex, there's a link in Step 3 on how to reduce your mesh density.

If you still have trouble, let me know!

Sweet! Thank you! I will look it over and see if this works on my current project.

In Fusion 360, I start by right-clicking on Document Settings under Browser and selecting "Do not capture design history". Click Continue. Then go up to Insert > Insert Mesh. Open the STL. Right-click on MeshBody1 in the browser then select Mesh to BRep. Delete MeshBody1 from the browser. You may want to delete unnecessary geometry after importing the STL.
