Are any of you cool guys running TMC2208 drivers in UART?

I am trying to enable uart on my chips and I'm not having much luck. I am hoping that maybe someone here can help out...

I have TMC2208s on my machines, but I just plugged and chugged. I don't know enough about UART to figure it out. But I did see that there are some 2208s that require external wiring, and some that don't (newer ones)? What ones do you have?

And what kind of issues are you running into?

I've done the solder job and have built the UART cables, but Marlin is still reporting that the chips are not enabled.

I followed this guide first, but had no luck.
https://www.instructables.com/id/UAR...otors-With-th/

Then I tried this guide, including the ridiculous extra bridge (I'm pretty sure they are just routing the PND pin to the less convenient MS3 pin, but whatever. I tried it and it didn't work).

I have the same exact Eryone chip shown in the second instructable and am using the MKS Gen_L board. I didn't reassig any pins, so stock Marlin 1.1.9 pins from Aux2. I have a 1k resistor on the Tx side and no resistor on the Rx end.

I gave up on UART and am rocking them in legacy mode. It's less than I'd hoped for, but it does address the artifacting issue, so all in all, mission accomplished.

Here is the before and after. 2208 on the left, 4988 on the right.

Quiet?

My Prusa mk3 has TMC2130s (I don't quite get the subassembly nomenclature). It is almost silent.

The Makerfarm i3v makes a lot of noise. I had a 6 inch part with some detail running on it and my daughter says "I like the music".

It's quieter, I guess, but I've got a noisy couple of fans so it's silent. The tones are audibly different. My printers live in a garage, so I really don't care what sounds they make, as long as it's under "hair dryer" levels. I just wanted to get rid of the salmon skin effect, because defects like that drive my OCD crazy.
