Why use 68 caliber?

No, I'm not asking you to compare 68 to 50 caliber. We all know which is better.

This is a much older question. Why were paintball markers first designed with 68 caliber barrels? Is that a common barrel size for something else, and gun smiths figured they could make paintballs to fit? Or did the paintballs come first, and the markers were built to fit them? Or did the first designers experiment with a bunch of different sizes and determine that 68 was the best?

I don't know why I've been thinking about this recently, but I'm curious about the history.

This doesn’t answer your question, but it might point you to where to find it. Nelson invented the paintball and the 1st guns to shoot them.

I remember hearing something about how they used the bath oil capsuling machine to make the paintballs. Maybe it is true, and if so maybe it was just convenient to use an existing machine and alter the shell and fill for a different purpose. Then just build the marker around the round.

Again, heard this well over a decade ago from some old guy at a field so I have no sources to point out at the moment.

Probably something to do with the amount of paint needed to clearly mark livestock or trees. I can't imagine anything smaller working well.

“But Lord,” asked Gabriel, “Is this not too generous to these Canadians?”

And God replied, “Just wait and see the neighbors I shall inflict upon them.”

Fan of EMR
The encapsulating machines already existed in that size, otherwise they would been too expensive.

Did the early paintball guns' ties to tranquilizer dart guns have anything to do with it? Or were those 50-caliber?

I remember hearing something about paintballs being made on the same encapsulation machines as horse medicine.

so i'm using my time machine and going back to the late 70's...
and watching some long haired guy talking to a machine operator about needing thousands of small, oil-paint filled balls...

"No, really man. I got this great idea and I'm gonna need about 10,000 balls."
