I had to run mine without the magic nipple, and it still shot fine.

Nothing is proprietary if it can be measured.

Is it spring loaded or anything? Or is it just surface area for Co2 to boil off on? If it's only purpose is to provide surface area, it would be more beneficial to use something porous to increase the surface area.

It is. This comes from a gen two.

I can measure stuff all day... but without the means to reproduce that stuff I'm still out of luck.

It is just surface area I suppose. It doesn't need to be there for the gun to work. Just makes it less likely for liquid to dump into the valve when running or the gun is pointed down.

Would one of the old brass diffuser discs fit in there? The type that looked like a bunch of little metal beads sandwiched into a puck.

I'm also surprised that the thread title has lasted this long......

I was looking through McMaster and stumbled upon this: McMaster-Carr

Does the smaller diameter section need to be smooth or can it be threaded?
All you would have to do is cut down the length of the screw to the proper size and then sand a bit of the button head.

5-10mins with a file and sand paper and you could make that part.

I ended up using a delrin autococker cup seal. It was already the same diameter, and was only about .8 mm taller. I only had to do some minor modifications to bring the smaller diameter part on top down to size.
It took about 10 minutes with a dremel and it fits perfectly.

I think the idea should be to provide a pinhole restriction, in the same concept as the sheridan shoot-to-puncture-pin making the smallest hole possible. The higher the flow rate, the greater the pressure drop through the orifice, which helps vaporize the CO2 at a lower pressure and temperature while buying some time for the expanding CO2 to warm back up before more wet CO2 can enter the chamber. It helps reduce hot shots on a new cartridge and saves that CO2 for later.
