Wasted

So, I was enjoying my recent bout of insomnia last night. I was scrolling through the movie channels hoping to find a great boring movie to convince myself that sleep is more important. I came across this, and ended up not sleeping until the next film...

Wasted! The Story of Food Waste | SUPER LTD

I like food as much as the next person, and probably more than other people. I was always told to eat what I take cause 'children are starving in China' and all that. I blame China on why I am fat. That is a story for another time...

Some notes of interest that stuck in my head.

It takes 25 years for a head of lettuce to decompose in a landfill.
decomposing food in landfills generates methane (inconvenient truth?)
Approx 40% of our landfills are food waste
10 million tons of produce goes unharvested a year
for every 1 pound of shrimp caught, 6 pounds of other seafood gets tossed
we throw away $165 billion of food a year

I work in a grocery store deli at the moment and yeah, it's bad. a lot of it is little bits of waste too, a slice here, a slice there, the big stuff we do our best to save for a pig farm, but you would not believe the amount of stuff produce and bakery throws out (a lot of the bakery stuff is inedible by the time they throw it out if that makes you feel any better)

And then there's the amount of waste after purchased and brought home. Sadly, we end up throwing out a decent amount of food that goes bad in the fridge.

As part of a training, we took a look at how many homeless families know what time and which day that food is thrown out at grocery stores to raid the trash bins.

Also a lot of food that people don't realize is still good. Some of those expiry dates are complete BS and you'd be surprised how long cooked food will last in the fridge.

Well, there's "Expired by" dates and "Best Before" dates. If it says it's expired, it probably is pretty close. If it says Best Before, it's just not as fresh.

I'm pretty sure the date I see on sour cream containers is 'expiration', but it is often still good for MONTHS after that date. Just one example.

These "expiration dates" can definitely get complicated at times.
