Ergonomic Questions regarding 45 frame

As I handle my phantom at home, nothing is uncomfortable about it EXCEPT the wraparound rubber grips. They drive me crazy. I want to change them for some basic 1911 grip panels, but I cannot remember the size.

Does the phantom take Govt. or Commander sized grips?

Also, does anybody else have problems with the rear frame screw bruising their hand? I went and played a super intense day of airball with electro guns and now my hand is bruised where it contacted the rear frame screw. I figure this is the result of me choking up past the finger grooves on my current grips.

Hopefully new grips will alleviate that problem, of not Iíll just replace the screw with a small machine screw.

On a side note, it was my first day playing with a pump against electro semis. I got wrecked a few times, and cleaned house a few more times. Had a great group of guys and loads of fun. Will do again.

You can always switch the rear grip screw out for a button head screw. It will make it so you need a tool to disassemble, but it might be more comfortable.

1. Government and Commander take the same grips, the slide and barrel are the main differences between those models. Most anything that is marked 45, not Officer's length of course, will fit. Soft Houges are a good bet. Hard grips with palm swells serve well for load bearing.

2. I wear gloves. The first ball between the knuckles will sell most players on them. If you pick ones with some web padding, you're set.

Have you considered an 86* or 90* grip?

I was sort of thinking of getting an 86* but I also thought of making myself a shorter 45 frame.

Looking at the way I choke up on the grip of my 45 I could possibly do with at least an inch less of grip at the bottom and move my ASA closer to the gun for a tighter fit.

That being said, thereís nothing wrong with the length, itís just not ideal for that kind of gripping. Itís not broke though, and thereís nothing handicapping my game.

Iíve already got some 1911 numrich grips on the way, and Iím snagging a 10-32 button screw to try out. If that doesnít work, maybe Iíll change it up a bit.

Thanks for the help everyone.

If you try gloves, remember that they change the feel of the grip. They can make a poor fit better or a good fit not good.

Something to try is stair-tape on the front-strap. As a gunsmith I used to checker .45 frontstraps, which was pretty Gucci, but talk about hard work. A piece of skateboard tape or stair tape on the frontstrap make a big difference for a few bucks. You can slice the front-strap of the wrap-around piece of the grips off with an exacto easily.

I gotta say that frame screw hitting the web of my hand on my WGP Snipers drives me crazy too.

I bought myself some half checkered govt. sized 1911 grips and it solved my problem. The big bump on the wraparounds forced my hand too high and caused the problem.

New grips was the trick. As far as the stair tape, I actually prefer smooth front straps.
