they wouldnt have switched if there was

i understand that its 3 less steps to finish without the flutes, but if the flutes made a difference, id have to think CCM would continue doing them that way, even if the took longer

I haven't noticed a difference in the pump stroke and I've used both. I think the flutes are there to gather dirt, to keep your pump stroke smooth. Seeing as the gun rarely gets THAT dirty (unless you play tourney ball in the mud), they're kinda pointless and are just cosmetically different.

I thought originally it had something to do with relieving the air pressure that could build up between the inside of the pump handle and the rod. Not sure if that is true though.

What I do know is my S6 has a fluted guide rod and it is the smoothest pump stroke I've felt. Better than my old T2, J2, and any other T2/S6.5 I've shot. Whether that has to do with the fluted guid or not I'm not sure. I do know that I don't want to mess with it and find out.

Isn't it designed to reduce the overall surface area that comes in contact with the pump plate.

But because of the awesomeness of CCM machines, the overall roundness of the rod improved. Thus, the max point of contact is down to 2 thus making the flutes pointless.
