After buying the kit to better control the ram speed, a 200psi compressor to give the machine the max pressure it is designed to work with, and adding lots of air vents to the shell molds, my machine still is unable to do what the one at Techshop was able to do. I can make the 3 smaller parts all day, but the shells are proving to be a huge hurdle. Techshop’s recent (temporary?) closing put a pretty big bump in the road of plan b. I am watching the chatter with the various Techshops as they attempt to reopen. Once the one in Chandler opens I will be back up there. Until then, this project is pretty much at a standstill.

I just found this project today - really impressed! It looks like its been a long time in the works! Sad to hear you are at a stand still due to Techshop closing

What do you think is causing your machine to short shot the larger parts? What is the material you are using? As far as I remember (from my one injection molding class in college, not an expert by any means), material flowability, gas trapping, and material feed issues can cause short shot? Did the upgrade kit you installed get you up to the 12.5 ton pressure?

On a side note, I find myself cursing photobucket at least once a day as I browse through old threads. Wish I could see all the old pictures!

I silly thought... A "shop vac" assist? Use a shop vac/vacuum pump to reduce the sir pressure in the mold to assist with filling?

I used a file to add air vents every inch or so around the perimeter of the mold. Without major modification to the mold I'm not sure how I would do a suction assist sort of thing. The puzzling thing is how TS's machine could just make parts, even though it wasn't vented, the mold probably wasn't properly preheated, and whatever else I forgot I've done since then. Appreciate the feedback though.

Longshot based on my own (tangentially related) experience, but when was the last time you purged the nozzle (with LDPE)? Maybe the flow issue is a blockage from degraded material or contaminant?

Is there enough room to create a wood "vacuum box" around the mold? Use the air outlets you created to reduce the pressure inside the mold.

After my "crank up the temp" test I was pretty frustrated and the plastic in the barrel was probably not the best material to keep anymore. So I removed the mold and just plunged the ram and a stream of plastic poured out super fast, emptying the barrel. The nozzle looks really good and doesn't hint at restricted flow in that area.

Very hard because the area the mold sits in is surrounded by a safety cage and clear plastic shield. That is a part of an air interlock and without that being down it stops the machine from working. It also hugs the area that the molds sits in very tightly.
