Prepping for anno, what do I need to know?

So, long story short I've been in the sport for 13 years but as of yet have never sent anything out for anno. A guy I work with is sending stuff out for anno and offered to send one of my markers along as a thank you for a bunch of work I have been doing for him.

Sending a custom cocker, was wondering if there is anything I need to know to prep it? Of course I will be disassembling it completely but it has a few scratches, how smooth do they need to be? 400 grit sand paper? 800 grit?

The one big thing you *MUST* do is remove all non aluminum. Steel, stainless, brass, etc will make the anodizer's life hell.

Ya I know that one. Aluminum and aluminum only needs to go in. I'm more wondering about how to get rid of scratches and dings beforehand

I think most anodizing places have the tools to take acre of those things.

Ya, I'd rather not assume though. If I can take care of it before hand I'm going to

you have to talk to them. normally they charge a high price if they have to deal with stuff such as removing cocker valves and keeping track of any extra parts you may have sent them

Ain't nobody but me touching my cocker to take it apart or put it together.

I do a lot of aluminum prep for my AR-15 receivers.

Removing scratches on an already anodized part is going to be problematic in that the area you don't polish will look different when done.

Is the new color going to be a polished finish or a blasted finish?

This makes a huge difference in how much needs to be done to blend everything together.

The ideal situation is to have it de-anodized properly, then polish/blast and re-anodize.

Here's a really boring video of my typical day at work.

Thanks Mike that helps me a lot.

I suppose I will take care of the clean up from the last milling as best I can but will probably not worry about smaller stuff so the finish will match in the end
