I watched a video on how to tie a shemagh, but I have a few questions. First, where do you get one? Second, do you have any trouble getting your mask over it, or with your mask staying securely in one place? Lastly, do they come in varying weights...I worry a bit about heat in the Texas summer.

Thanks!

They are super light and airy (hence their popularity in the desert) that said I don't wear it all around the head like the how to vids. When I wear one I simply wrap it around the neck a few times like a neck collar.

It works beautifully. Also in the dead of summer you can get it wet and it'll keep you super cool. I do this for yardwork and wear it on my head like a sandana. I'll try to dig up a pic.

Like this:

As for where to get them, shopping around is your best bet for price. I've always stuck with Brigade Quartermaster.

Or you could get the "real" thing cheap:

I have several of those^ in red and black that are identical that I brought back from Afghan and Iraq. Hope this helps.

I'd at least experiment with it around my head like in the video...bald head = sunburn liability. :-)

Nope, the brown one in the picture I picked up at the base PX. That was a Brigade QM shemagh. The others I linked I picked up at local Bazaars while deployed. My wife likes to use them as tablecloths...

I've picked up a couple over the years but my favorite one has to be from Full Clip (FULL CLIP USA). I haven't had any problems with fading or staining as easily as other brands I've tried. As for dealing with the heat, the only time I've had problems with overheating and fogging when I've tried to tie it off like they suggest on youtube. I've had the best luck folding it in half on top of my head (neckerchief style), then putting on my mask over and then crossing the ends in front and tying off if the back. This way still covers your neck, while allowing a gap underneath your chin for ventilation.

If you do a search, there's another thread on this with some more links and a pic of tying it.
