Spectacular Tank Reg Failure

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rq23fYxALjQ

CCTV security cam footage of the event as it occurred:

More of the same but all four cams:

From what the Tech at the shop told me, the customer must have used some manner of petroleum-based sealing product on the gauge he thinks.

It caused the valve stem to expand, pushing past the purge holes and only one purged causing spin, the whole works then bounced off the floor, off his head, and into the bathroom door.

Regardless of what happened or what did not happen or the theory you might have, the moral here, aside form the DO NOT KILL YOUR TECHS, is to only used approved sealing materials and for god's sake check the condition the tanks, regs, fill nipples, and gauges prior to filling.

Trying to show the overall damage to the reg:

Note the bent valve stem:

The impact site on the store floor:

Note how the burst disc (I know I had the gauge face in the video it was the gauge that hit) and the asa threads match the gouges perfectly:

And, the hole in the bathroom door:

The tech filled the tank, and placed the tank on the counter, our cash register is right out of frame, and went back to grab something else for the customer, and that is when the failure happened. Scary stuff, I could have lost my friend if it had not ricocheted off the floor or if a smaller part had hit him.

Still has a slight goose-egg on his fore head, but he is OK. Lucky and OK.

Holy crap, I'm glad to hear your tech is ok, after seeing what that did to the wall I was expecting to hear the worst. This is why I don't touch my HPA tank. I feel more comfortable teching my smaller co2 tanks, but I refuse to touch my HPA tank. Granted I think I could probably fix it no problem, I just don't want the liability, I'll pay the couple bucks and let the professional handle it thank you very much.

every time i post in a thread about tanks i tell them to leave the modding to the airsmiths, you know what replies i get, even on mcb?

"it's actually easy and doesn't take much training."

you know what happens? this.
why? because lurkers and members read those replies and never think twice.

this is why we can't have nice things.

Well, feel free to link to this thread. People tend to get too willy nilly about having anywhere a ton and a half to two and a quarter tons of pressure right next to their vital bits.

The lesson here is for anyone that fills tanks to inspect them prior to filling. That might have stopped this from happening.

Sometimes I think that we lose respect for the potential dangers inherent in our gear.

I still refuse to do any major work on tanks. 4500 psi next to my face is still rather scary.
