Shields in walk on play

Hello,

Yesterday i played walk on play at a local field and there was a player using a shield. The player could not have a marker and could not achieve objectives. However a player can stand behind them firing away. Do they allow this at your local field? Would you bring a shield to walk on play?

Fyi this walk on group was mostly new and low experience players.

I’ve never seen such a thing...

However, based on how you described it, as long as the shield is a reasonable size, I’m not totally against it. Obviously, if they’re carrying a billboard around completely shrouding themselves and a teammate from balls, it’s going to be a no go. Lol

I'm all for experimenting, but that seems to give one team an advantage. Maybe. It at least makes the odds different.

Now, if it were an asymmetrical game, like an assault type scenario, I'd be totally cool with that. Or if both teams had a shield, that would be neat. But one shield on a symmetrical game doesn't sit right.

For random scenario type games I have seen similar things.

My favorite was a zombie capture the fort. It was something around 6-1 odds. They took some of the better players with nicer markers and made them zombies. They could only be killed by headshots.

It was something like 8 zombie against 50ish people. The people had to eliminate the zombies or eradicate the virus. To do that they had to get into the fort and deposit the antidote (capture a flag in the middle of the fort) or shoot all the zombies in the head.

Now here is the interesting part. Every human eliminated went behind the fort and spawned as a zombie. So as the game progresses you will get more zombies.

It was a lot of fun.

That’s true, but imagine it in speedball. I assume if it was Rec Ball they probably played all sorts of game types. Haha.

It was an attack and defend castle type game so a shield attacking is okay but they where using it defending

Saw someone with a Mattress once, it was allowed, but not terribly useful.

if it's explicitly allowed by the field for a specific game type (scenario, etc.), with rules provided, I have no beef. Sounds like that may have been the case here.

Otherwise, it's your equipment, I hit it, you're out.

I experienced something similar a few months ago. My opinion is that shields should be left to scenario games and small enough to not allow multiple players to hide behind.
