Melee weapons in paintball?

Please explain to me the allowance, use and justification of melee weapons in paintball games. I just don't understand it.

Am I just showing my ignorance from what is now a probably more than fifteen year lapse in actually playing the game?

BTW: Heck of a job making that rubberized foam frying pan!

I'll be honest, I don't get it either... I find it a little morbid that someone would want to simulate knifing someone else.

I'll also recognize that statement is somewhat at odds with the game of paintball, but want to qualify the statement with the fact that I view paintball as a strange game of tag, not a viable alternative to actual combat.

“But Lord,” asked Gabriel, “Is this not too generous to these Canadians?”

And God replied, “Just wait and see the neighbors I shall inflict upon them.”

The frying pan is cool. If you're bringing a goofy prop for a lighthearted scenario game and you can get an elim by sneaking up on a guy with it, that's all good in my book. I'd get a laugh out of it.

If you're the kind of guy who rolls onto a rec field with anything from Cold Steel or similar on your pouch, get out of here with that ridiculous horse****.

Let's put it this way - if I sneak up behind someone, I prefer not to "barrel tag" them because I'd rather not risk accidentally blasting them at point blank range. So I'm going to pat them on the shoulder with my hand or rubber frying pan.

And the frying pan is a better conversation starter than my hand. That's literally it.

Honestly, it's just a creative barrel tag. Who doesn't love a good barrel tag / surrender!

EDIT: freedummy beat me to it.

Its just a bit if absurdity to add to a silly game. If you don't think that (gently) whacking somebody with a foam frying pan is funny then you didn't watch the same cartoons that I did growing up

I'd say that makes me something of an authority on absurdity

I...... didn’t even know this was a thing....

Umm..... ok I guess.... just don’t hit me with it, tap me and say I’m out or you are liable to get hit back before I know what is going on. And it will not be a foam frying pan. And then I will feel bad at hitting you over a joke. Not that I’m billy badass or anything, just that you will surprise the **** out of me and who knows what will happen next. Flight? Fight? Who knows!
