It’s just an architypal theme I’ve run into in my short life. All of us have met that person who was “sponsored” at some point and time. I’m just fortunate to have good friends that make weird and fun things.

It's easy to forget that this sport was rolling so hard, and so successful, that for a few years if you managed to get a podium spot a sponsor came forward.

I was one of the archetypical types myself.

I was going to type the same thing.

For a while, we were sponsored by a beer company. Shipyard beer. The deal was we got free beer, as long as we hung the banner at events. Having all that free beer was a detriment to actually winning tournaments, but they didn't seem to care about that.

But you had all sorts of different sponsorships. Gear companies wanted higher visibility, which usually meant having to make the podium. On the other hand, lots of fields were happy to sponsor -anyone-.

Field sponsorships were huge in the 90s, back before the internet, and it was still a fridge sport, so it couldn't really advertise. So fields LOVED any team that travels- It was the best advertising, so you hang a banner, get free paint, etc.

But that type of field sponsorship mostly went away with the 'net crash of 2001
