Not exactly. The "vert tank to block hits" came later.

Originally, the trend for vert tanks was because speedball was just becoming huge, around 92 or so, and EVERYONE thought they needed compact guns to play.

So, you saw short barrels and vert tanks in tournament speedball, where, obviously, gun hits count. Gun companies saw this, and released "vert tank" guns listed above. That trend was short lived- Barrels eventually got normal length, and even longer (so to push in bunkers). Vert ASA's remained, but not for tanks. Instead, to hold regulators and E/Cs.

And apparently, those tournament speedballers found a side benefit during rec play. Who knew?
