Define milsim

So got into a conversation on reddit about what milsim is and what markers qualify as milsim. Basically I said paintball (as a whole) has generally stayed away from milsim and that the milsim type guns really only took off about 10 or so years ago, maybe more like 15. Well somebody else commented that paintball has been milsim from day one and that 007's and 707's and PGP's and kp2s are milsim guns. So what do you guys think.

I play milsim with a lever kp2. And pump guns, and anything.

Milsim has been around a long long time.

Magfed only really took off more recently.

Read about the difference here. https://www.mcarterbrown.com/forums/...ut-magfed.html

To me milsim has always been something that looks like a military type firearm, rather than something that looks like an ordinary rifle or pistol. Not a type of game play like magfed.

You're both kind of right.
Magazine-fed guns weren't widely available until about 10 years ago and what was available was generally pretty poor and unreliable. The lack of development is partly because of lack of interest (only crazy people with pumps would willingly want to handicap themselves) but also partly due to a concerted effort within the paintball industry to suppress military-looking gear and game formats in favor of tournament-style speedball above all else. This was done both because of fear of public scrutiny in the wake of the Columbine massacre, but also because it was thought that the speedball format would be much more profitable for the sport as a whole and a pathway to faster growth. This and other reasons would lead to a catastrophic collapse in the hobby's popularity just before the 2008 recession from which it has never recovered.

Technically, guns were moving towards realism as far back as the mid 80s with the KP series and Thompson Snipers. They did move away from that, and there was an active effort to minimize the connection to militarism in the 90s and early 2000s, but that didn't stop companies like RAP4 and Armotech from making milsim guns by 2003, if not earlier. Spec Ops showed up by 2005. But really, the idea that the industry pushing speedball is what caused the decline in paintball is simply absurd. I did a school paper on the subject, and every hobby industry was hit. Paintball declined because the economy crashed, pure and simple.

To say it never recovered is arguable as well. While it's not at the same point as it was in 2005, but it certainly has stabilized.

1) Get up hours before the field opens and run until you puke
2) Rent your equipment
3) Pick up all of the cigarette butts in the parking lot before you play
4) Donít shoot at any other player until they shoot at you first
5) Wear a reflective belt or vest

If you do 3/5 of these, you are milsimming correctly.

Is the reflective belt an air force or army thing? We never had to wear those in the navy, of course we had those awful yellow shirts

Welp I guess I'm done with the internet today.

I'm dead lol.

Please someone make a YouTube video on paintball or heck even airsoft milsim and please in this video do all of the mundane things that actually happen in the military like the things mentioned above.

You could also include calling everyone out to show up ready for a game and then just have them stand around for a couple of hours and not actually play then go home, smoking people for no good reason, and most important of all PowerPoint presentations. Lots of PowerPoint presentations.
