Well, the baggage handlers aren't routinely opening bags and combing through them as part of the daily work load

Yeah, it's BS. They won't even allow you to mail them home on your own expense. It's armed robbery.

TSA is responsible for "security", right?

Those of you thinking it's extortion to "seize" your stuff- they give you a very simple choice- you can't board with those items, so it's your choice, pitch them in the big box, step out of line and go put them in your car or ship, or go home. No one is detained until they give their stuff up!!

The vast majority of people in airports would miss their flight worth several hundred dollars if they tried to keep their 15 to 50 dollar pocket tool.

A vending machine selling prepaid envelopes with a mail box that you can use without losing your space in line would make the federal government more money and allow citizens to keep their junk. Just because you have two choices and one that doesn't mean you lose your property doesn't mean it's a good situation or one that can't be improved with very little effort.

That is a far too sensible and accommodating idea for the US gummint to consider.

Items aren't seized. When you go through a checkpoint with an item that is prohibited you are given options on what you'd like to do with that item and none of those options are seizure. You can choose to voluntarily abandon that item but it is your choice.

There are many airports that offer this service.

You'd be surprised at what happens in the baggage system both before and after TSA potentially has to open your bag. I'm not going to say that TSA has never stolen anything from a passenger but I will say that it would be a lot easier for a baggage handler to steal something.

You are given many options on what you want to do with the prohibited item that you have. If the airport that you are traveling through has that service it should be offered to you.
