Always were. Just a lot of forgetful people seem to go through airports.
The right Swiss army knife can be worth a bit to the right person. Almost always the rarer/interesting ones are sold separately to collectors

That's actually legit, I was a cop when the TSA was formed, we could go to Springfield where they auction off state and military surplus equipment and pretty much take whatever we wanted for "duty use". There were PALLETS of confiscations in big chest high boxes, tens of thousands of cheep crap, knitting needles, kitchen knives, cork screws and clippers. I brought back 20-30 Leatherman-gerber tools for our officers, and a hand full of really good knives! Now they figured out they can sell them so that dried up fast!

There used to be a .gov auction site for tsa confiscated stuff. This may be a resale of the og sale on the .gov.

I've been carrying the same Swiss Army Knife every day for decades.

Having to put it into checked luggage when flying makes me feel practically naked.

Am I the only one who feels this is borderline BS? Yes, these rules have been in place for sometime so we should all know better. But to seize property without making any sort of an attempt to return it (mail it to the address on the state issued id or what have you), seem like BS to me. I get the whole "we can detain you because you pose a "threat" or you can "surrender" your knitting needles & we'll allow you board" scenario but it's still bs in my mind.

So the rest of us taxpayers can pay for the mistake? No thanks. Personal accountability and responsibility go a long way. You can take your knife and go home, or you can surrender your property. Expecting them to run a courier service too is over the top.

Selling prepaid envelopes and having a mailbox nearby would be nice.
