Sounds to me like you have a short... That would definitely cause what you are describing. But you said that it happens with your dad's electronics swapped in, that would lead me to believe it is the battery. Either it is 'worn out' or your charger is not working properly anymore.

The stock axial motors are of the sealed can variety (I've taken them apart, but it's not worth it to try to fix) so if something fell out the only thing that I can think of would be a piece of a brush or a chunk of the fan for some reason.

Unfortunately, like the SNES, nothing lasts forever.

Hmm. The battery could definitely be suspect. It sat for ages and when I charged it, it only took about 5 minutes. The things it's, I read the charger instructions, but I'm still not 100% sure I did it right. It's only a LiPo, not like they blow In giant balls of fire or anything. :-D

If you have access to a multimeter I would definitely check the voltage. My charger is pretty good, It's got a little LCD on it that shows the voltage, charge rate and some other stuff. Try another battery, something you know is good. My bet is 100% the battery isn't fully charging and so the esc's lipo low voltage cutoff keeps getting triggered when the esc demands increased current for starting the motor.

I still haven't fixed my wraith, however, I'm still looking to pick up a Axial SCX II or the like, for something a little more to scale than the wraith! Ha.

Bump!
