Repurpose Fire Engine

I have seen some great prices for used Fire Trucks. They have diesel engines, low miles, great maintenance, great tool boxes... If some specialty equipment was unbolted and disabled, it could be a great work truck. Does anyone repurpose these as work trucks? I can't find any evidence of repurposed fire trucks.

A local dairy farmer bought one that the department was selling and took basically everything but the cab off and used it to haul things, mostly hay if I remember correctly. Small town politics being what they are, and him being on the department I'm sure helped with the price.

They may generally have low mileage, but keep in mind they'll also generally have huge numbers of hours on the engine, as it generally gets parked and left running for many hours at fire scenes, accidents and other emergencies.

Yeah, a good diesel with regular maintenance can take that pretty well, but just keep in mind a lot of the auxiliary stuff, like alternators, water pumps, power steering pumps, lift pumps, glow plugs, injectors and what have you can start going out at any time.

Im also going to bet wiring is a nightmare, and the strain of thousands of gallons of water on the chassis has it a bit... undesirable.

I know this thread is a couple months old, but wanted to chime in. Yes fire trucks generally have low miles, but they lived a very hard life in that time. They constantly get started up cold and instantly driven hard like a race car, only to be brought back home and shut right off. It is not good for them.
