Off-road tires on a new Rebel 300/500?

I'll preface this by saying my riding experience is pretty limited and consists mainly of my '10 KLR650. That being said, I've been thinking for a little while about getting something a little lower and lighter-the KLR is a fantastic bike, and I love it to pieces but it's not exactly a fantastic highway cruiser, and...well, I saw the new Rebel 500 in person today and just kinda fell in love with it's weird mash of naked bike and cafe racer looks. Light years better than the soft, generic cruiser looks they used to have.
However, I also live in the Yukon which, surprise-surprise, has some pretty **** roads. The Alaska Highway that people lust about taking loaded dual-sports up and down is just what I drive on to go to work every day. So I'd like a slightly more aggressive tire that can also handle gravel and such well-not for regular off-road use by any means, but not so I'm making diamonds when I have to go down a bad road.
Plus, I've always been of the opinion that virtually any vehicle looks better with an aggressive tire.
So is this a practical application, or just something stupid?
