It's a huge known issue with fords DCT. I had a 12" focus as well and dumped it off as soon as I started having the shuddering issue. I also had an power steering motor fail in mine. A renter of ours has one and has had the clutch replaced twice and the ECU.

I'm a huge Subaru fan.
My 07 Forester has 170k+ hard miles and it's been unbelievably reliable
Impreza,Crosstrex or Foresters may be a little out of your price range but are head and shoulders above ANY American car you could purchase
AWD,plenty of space decent mpg and super safe
I got a slamming deal on mine at 10k,it's only devalued a small amount since I purchased it in 2010

I have a Tacoma that's been dead reliable, although obviously not a car. 4wd is nice in winter

Get a Corolla and a camry or a Highlander depending on specific needs. From experience these will let you drive the most and worry about the car the least. You don't want a turbo if you want to have low maintenance
