Another fan here. I keep it on my laptop for between classes or background noise while I study. I don't know which idea to subscribe to: the post-apocalyptic theory or the completely-imagination one, but they both make sense. I do like that they have the innocent "adventure!" style for kids, but do have the bleak and cynical little things in the background, and it's all treated as normal and ignored for the better things or brought to light in a more childish, upbeat manner. Much the same as Earthbound treated things, so it's a total nostalgia trip for me. Overall, it's basically like shoving notebook-margin doodles, Calvin and Hobbes, and a D&D manual in a blender.
