Depends on the cookie context. Store-bought cookies should be crunchy, home-made cookies should be soft. If a store-bought cookie is soft, god knows what unnatural things are in them to keep them that way during their months on the shelf (I'm assuming pre-packaged, mass-manufactured cookies. Not the in-store bakery ones). Home-made cookies should be soft, warm and gooey, straight-from-the-oven.

It really depends to be honest. There is a time and a place for a wide range of tastes and textures.

Having a tall glass of milk? A fresh baked, melt in your mouth cookie to go with it please.

Having a cup of tea? Well, I prefer a firmer 'sweet biscuit' like cookie that is more suited to dunking to go with it. It does not need to be soft and moist on its own, as the tea will quickly take care of that instead.
