Im on book 5 now. Reading the books and watching the show can be a little confusing as there are definitely some variances in the story lines. The tv show even has some characters that do not appear in the books. I watched seasons 1 and 2, but havent started in on 3 yet as by the time all the kids are asleep I'm too tired/unmotivated to stay up and watch them.
Heinous, not only does it have puppies and boobies, it eventually has zombies and dragons to boot!

I'm just finishing season 7 and very disappointed in how "contrived" the story line of the last few episodes feel.
The writing was so amazingly good coming up to this point, I have to wonder if there is a term for it in writer's parlance.
i'll go with the very simple, "sh*t or get off the pot".
I really do hate "contrivances" that writers and authors use to steer a story line or finish the plot trajectories.
These last few episodes almost make me want to do Walking Dead comparisons...
the whole storyline of, "We need a dead guy to convince Cersei" is utter garbage.
What if cersei said, "I don't care about this dead army since you only have the one dead guy to show me"?
I was wondering how an army of dead guys were gonna climb the wall,
especially after uncle benjen said there was magic in the wall to prevent him and the dead from crossing over the wall.
where did the army of the dead get "matching" chain links that are almost a mile long?
and how did they attach them to the dragon at the bottom of a frozen lake?

I'm guessing that since they're dead they don't breath and can walk about under water - as for the chains, I think I remember seeing shipwrecks on the lake too. Perhaps they got some chain from the ships?

The show lost some of its guidance once they started outpacing the books that have been written so far. At some point a few seasons back, they started to deviate from the source material which has created a bit of a snowball effect in some areas. The show also invented characters like the Night King to create a central bad guy to focus on for the wight walkers. As seasons went on, you can tell the writers were trying to speed run the story in order to get it over with. This has led to a lot of plot holes, fast travel situations and other WTF moments. I still think the show is enjoyable and I'm looking forward to the final season. But I wonder how it would have been had the writers not played fast & loose with the original source material.

As it is though, yeah, they've done a pretty crummy job deciding where to go next.
