Happy birthday, Audie Murphy.

I just thought it would be nice to take just a moment to acknowledge the birthday of the most decorated veteran of World War Two.

Audie Murphy joined the Army at age 17 after lying about his age. He recieved the Medal of Honor at age 19.

Here are a list of his achievements:

One Congressional Medal of Honor, one Distinguished Service Cross, two Silver Stars, one Legion of Merit medal, two Bronze Stars (one with a V Device), three Purple Hearts, two Presidential Unit Citations, one French Legion of Honor medal, three French Croix de Guerre medals, and one Belgian Croix de Guerre medal.

"The true meaning of America, you ask? It's in a Texas rodeo, in a policeman's badge, in the sound of laughing children, in a political rally, in a newspaper... In all these things, and many more, you'll find America. In all these things, you'll find freedom. And freedom is what America means to the world. And to me." --Audie Murphy

If you ever get the chance to watch it, watch the movie "To Hell and Back". It was filmed in the 50's and is a biography of his time before WWII and during the war. It is actually starred by Audie himself. After returning from the war, Audie starred in many films and actually wrote and recorded country music.

Audie was killed in 1971 when a small plane he was aboard crashed into a mountain due to a heavy storm. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Happy birthday, Major.

I read his book, To Hell and Back, several years ago.

It was interesting that he originally tried to join the Marines but they would not take him because he was too small (he was only 5'4" tall & very underweight). So he then went to a US Army recuiter & they said the same thing, but they instead made him sit outside their office & eat a bunch of bananas in order to make weight.

He later had movie career after returning from the war. My favorite movie with him was, Red Badge of Courage. It seemed like a part that was opposite of his personality.
