Policy Question

I've need listening to Vermont Public Radio this morning at work and they have been talking about a package to stimulate the economy and how much money the government is going to give back to us this year, etc.

All that keeps coming to mind is that saying that I can't quite remember exactly but is somethign about giving food vs teaching to grow it and feeding for a day or a lifetime (I'm sure most people here know the one I'm talking about)

So why instead of giving these big paybacks every 5-10 years and wasting all kinds of time and money figureing out when, how much and how to do it, why don't they just find a way to encurage F'ing jobs in this country! Prefferably ones that pay more than minimum wage.

Ok I'm done being pissy for now thinks for listening

Because if we were all self reliant we wouldn't look at the politicians as "saviors" and their power would diminish.

I`ll take whatever taxes they give back, but I`ll just roll it into my savings account. The last time the federal government did this this there were advocates screaming that the people who did not actually pay any income taxes should get it as well. Go figure. You would think if they wanted to stimulate the economy they would build more refineries here.

The last time they did this, it didn't do jack for the economy and was a complete waste.

Now we are heading into recession since everyone is scared that our tax rate is going to hike back up since the congress won't make the tax cuts permanent. Get ready for the ride to derail....

What they ought to do for more permanent solution is instead of temporary rebates, give permanent tax cuts to industries they'd like to see flourish.

Got a bunch of old refineries belching out pollutants because they can't renovate because they cannot afford to do EVERYTHING at once like is required if they renovate anything?

Why not make all of thier equiptment costs totally tax creditable?

You'd have a bunch of refineries, powerplants, etc over night becomeing more efficient, cleaner, and cheaper to run.

Take that scale out to other things, you'd have more jobs avaiable (someone has to build the stuff, and install it) make it a total write off to make things more efficient, and cleaner etc, by allowing corperations to count depreciation accurately.

Cut taxes on corperations, that's where the jobs come from.

Thier share holders will not suffer from high taxes, they will simply raise prices (hitting the consumer) and not hire as many employees (hurting the job market). You cut the corperate income taxes, you will see less companies moving over seas to avoid taxation, you will see less tax shelters, you will see them hireing more people, and lowering thier prices.

Americans are one of the best work forces in the world, less trainign needed for most stuff, and they don't steal everything that is nailed down.

Unfortunately, these things are countered by the obnoxiously powerful unions, and high taxes from the government trying to "stick it to the man".

When the tide goes down, all the ships do too.

Even though the big ships run aground first, you keep drainign the water out of the pool, you will eventually end up with all the boats sitting in mud.

Rising tide raises all ships.

Supply side economics works, works, and works again.

Stimulus packages are the same thing Carter tried.

It wasn't til reagan cut taxes that real economic developement occured. The 90's boom was due to that, and the fact that the Soviet union collapsed.

This wold work today as well.

If only people would look past thier own envy, and greed, and realize that if the top goes up, they have to sell to somebody, so you are gonna go up too. You may see them go up faster, but so what? You are still going up too.

People get too worried about the corvette passing them, and don't see the fact that they are blowing the doors off Yugo's right and left.
