The FLSA has anti-retaliation provisions with teeth, and class actions multiply those little 4 uncompensated hours into large problems. The OP would probably make a good plaintiff-side employment law lawyer quite happy.

What QL's in-house/outside counsel know about, and what some middle manger has implemented, may be two different things.

Air Power Vector, for the man that has climbed to the peak and wants to look down on the beaten and defeated opponents left in his wake.

I say that is a load of crap. Four hours of mandatory "volunteer" work is four hours of unpaid work and it is just a little more chipping away at the rights of workers. If an employer wants me to do something and he isn't paying me for it then it isn't getting done.
Thank god there are others on here still interested in freedom. Between this and the TSA thread I was starting to have a hard time choking it all down.

I'd rather be forced into 4 hours of volunteer work than be forced into paying union dues for my entire career.

Crazy concept. If your employer asks you to do something you don't want to do.....quit. Turn in your notice. There are thousands of employers out there. If you are good employee you should have no problem finding a better opportunity.

If employment was that easy I would.
Michigan is an at will state, with ZERO protections for trans-folk.

I interviewed at 8 places. 7 said no because they: didn't want to have to deal with a trans person's drama, or I "wouldn't fit in" etc. While my documents list female, any back ground check shows my old name, gender, etc. OR if that doesn't show, any past work references will. It's annoying

Was Sooo much easier when I presented as a dude to get hired. Flash some charm, done deal.

Hell, I'm looking into doing porn as an option for the record... that stuff hires us.

I recall, right or wrong, from previous threads that you recently had a lot of time off work for the surgery and may have even done a lot of job-hopping recently. Employers are going to know this stuff based on your resume and a quick call to previous employers.
Point is, there may be other reasons at play that are making it harder to find work, but I'm sure that you're right that gender is a factor.
I hope you're able to land a good gig soon, good luck on the hunt.

Why should she have to go find a new job if the employer is pressing for something that may not be legal? It would be one thing if you just don't like your job, but if they are trying to coerce you at the risk of your livelihood...

As someone who's owned my own business and managed several others, I agree with you, to a point, on the voluntary 4 hours. If you signed up, agreed to compensated training knowing ahead of time those hours were required, then it's a non issue. You took the job and agreed to the requirements up front, accepted the pay checks, and are now looking for a reason to complain.

If the training was not paid for and/or the 4 hour requirement not made know ahead of time, that is an issue.

As for the above quoted stuffs, I would suggest removing the label from your title. Your not a trans employee, your an employee period. Personal life/issues/drama do not belong in the work place nor is any of that what you are being compsated for/to do. Leave it out of the interview process, any that try to make it an issue do not below in the position of authority and you would be right to bring it to their superiors for doing so.
