The update: I paid him a visit tonight.

"Well, it looked like it kind of hurt when you had to get rid of it."
"Yeah, it really kind of did." Translation to Tough Old Dad: 'I was attached to that.'
"So I did a little research, started some searching..."
"What'd you do, find another like it?"
"Not exactly..."
I unzipped the case and showed him.
"Oh... oh wow. That looks better than it ever did."
And he was all smiles for the couple hours I was over there.

Of course, now that he wants to 'make sure it works again', I had to grab a cheap beater 870 from the closest pawn shop...

So what's missing from the 870?
This has been a great project thread, perfect ending. Well done man.

Some finish on the wood.
Hey, I still have the polyurethane...

Thanks for the words, guys. From dad's reaction, it was indeed a great success.

I've always thought about taking an old beater shotgun and trying that hydro dipping method on the stock for gits and shiggles.

I could see that if I could afford a couple range toys.
For all-purpose stuff, I'm a fan of either bare stainless or all-black and polymer, or for more traditional stuff black/blued and shiny wood.
So this might get stripped and polyurethaned with the leftover from dad's project.
The pressed checkering it mostly for looks anyway.
