New Hampsters, why do you love the wheel you live?

New Hampshire is on several "#1 Freest State" lists, which is insanely attractive. Without getting too political, I lean towards libertarian. My wife is from Virginia, I am from Oregon, have lived in Idaho and now Utah. We see eye to eye on the important issues, and NH seems like a really amazing place to live. Not just because of the freedom aspect, but the natural beauty and of course, paintball. OSG and other fields looks sooooo awesome, and we just aren't that lucky where I live.

So, those of you who reside there, what do you love and not-so-much like about it?

I grew up in Massachusetts still work there but the price of property is astounding. Moved into southern NH and is much better.

That combined with the love for the area I moved to.

I'll give you the fireworks but I think it is definitely easier to get liquor in MA. We don't have to deal with going to the state liquor store to buy booze. There are 4 liquor stores in my small town and a few other places that you can buy beer and wine at.

There’s a lot to like in New Hamp****e. I live a few minutes from the border on the MA side and frequently make the trip for the no sales tax, great camping, OSG when my friends will make the drive, assorted breweries, skiing, fun in and around the big lakes. Of course it’s also on the way to Maine and Vermont for me, which feel close, so there’s lots of similar great stuff nearby for fun adventures.

Edit: and yeah I agree it’s easier to get liquor in MA. But beer in grocery stores in NH is a little too easy.

But can you buy beer in every convenience store?

I was born/raised right outside of Manchester and moved south of the border a little after college. My review is obviously focused on Hillsborough County (Southern NH), but lemme break it down for ya.

+Beautiful outdoor spaces
+Some excellent school districts
+No income tax
+No sales tax*
+Lots of paintball
+Lots of variation between lakes region/seacoast/cities/etc
+Foliage
+Fireworks
+2nd Amendment friendly (YMMV)
+Great hospitals in Southern NH
+Easy access to Portland/Boston
+Seasons
+Outside of the occasional hurricanes/blizzards/flooding, pretty stable natural disaster wise.
+The entire state has a 603 phone code

-7% prepared food tax (this is the sales tax *)
-High property taxes
-Highest in-state college tuition in the country
-Cities can be really rough (West Side of Manchester, Trashua)
-State Liquor store hours
-Bars close at ~12:30 AM (YMMV)
-Restaurants are not on par with some other parts of New England (Don't get me wrong, food can be/is excellent, but outside of chains, you sometimes suffer for real high end dining or options. Again, YMMV).
-Extremes of all seasons (Frigid Winters, Stupid hot summers, washed out Springs, you will see it all.)
-Outside of Cities, high lack of diversity

I'm forgetting some stuff, but I can answer specific questions if you have any.

Theres 3-4 state liquor stores near me. And beer/wine in all the convenience stores unlike Massachusetts.

The big ones on the highway get all the attention but there are many small ones in plazas that are very easily missed.

I love it here.

I live in the middle south so it's an hour-ish to everywhere.

Hour to the ocean
Hour and less to awesome mountains
Hour to a huge lake
Hour to Boston (big city if you want to visit)

It's New England so you're surrounded by some of the best schools and hospitals in the country. There's plenty of work everywhere it seems...

Manchester NH has Dean Kamen - and it's doing some crazy amazing stuff right now.

We're not as hippy of VT (sorry VT)
We're still hopping and plenty to do here and not as laid back as ME (Sorry ME)
We're more composed and not as crazy as MA (not sorry MA)

So yeah... Come to NH.
