Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" is a tighter, better work of literature, but it and "1984" both have great moments, and similar themes. Watch Brazil (1985)--and be sure to see the alternate endings--if you want to watch a movie version of 1984.

In the world I see - you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying strips of venison on the empty car pool lane of some abandoned superhighway.

I remember sitting in a classroom and discussing 1984 and the comment was made that 1984 was just 10 years away. The implication was that it was the future that we would live in, a world where the government controls every part of your life. The book was written in 1948, so it was just a random guess, reversing 48 to get 84. He should have named it 2024.That's my prediction.
