My dad worked in commercial building loans for 30 some years. Every time I got a letter in the mail about consolidating my student loan debt he would shred it. He said they would make you sign your life away for a few penny savings in the end. He told me to do two things, call your current loan company and just talk to them and to consolidate with a home equity loan if you have a house.

Currently we are consolidating my fiancee student loans into a home equity loan.

Because somebody can't go to your place to repo your *** to sell to someone else.

Yep, the terms are "secured" and "unsecured" loans. If you have collateral, the rate will be lower because the lender has something they can take from you to recoup their investment.
