Trying out this feature called Debitize - will let you know how it works!

Just signed up for a company called Debitize.com

So apparently how it works is it allows you to have all the perks of a credit card - chargebacks, money back, points for airfare, whatever... All those perks, but acts like a debit card so you don't overspend on your budget.

I've been using my debit card as I hate going into debt, but always upsets me when I miss out on my 2% back for flights. (capital one)

So apparently this will allow me to use my credit card, but the next day it will come out of my debit account.

So I need to be aware of what I'm spending and what is automatically coming out of my credit card. Should be interesting as some mindless stuff does come out of my card, but that's what I'm currently trying to stop.

So the timing is perfect.

I'll let you all know if it backfires, but so far so good.

Oh and yes that IS a referral link. By clicking this: Debitize.com

If you use it, you'll get $10. I mean, I will too, so so will you. But maybe wait a few more days and I'll report back if it's even any good.

Ok,

Just placed my first credit card order for a roku player off of walmart...

I'll know in a couple days how it worked.

I also see a spot to halt / pause the automatic deductions. So that's cool for the big emergencies.

Well, so far, I'm not overly impressed. It's taking a while.

So I purchased two Roku players for my internet tv from Walmart on the 21st.

Today is the 25th and it's finally showing as pending from my checking account.

Finally...

Not sure if it is worse or better. I mean, I could have manually gone and done it. But I would have had to think about it. This is mindless, but it does have the threat of taking directly out of my checking so it does make me think of the credit card like a debit card now so at least I really think twice about what I'm purchasing and if I can afford it.

i.e., makes me really pay attention to the money on hand.

So that's a good thing. Going to give it another full week and reserve my final thoughts until then. So far it's not horrible, but not great either.

Thanks, I don't mind talking to myself. There's really not much people can add to it, so I get the no replies. I'll update this on Friday when I get a good feel for it.

Just a minor update. On the 25th debitize pulled some money out, and a few more bucks to fully clean up the card for another purchase on the 26th.

So that's out of my debit account right now. So far nothing showing on the credit card side that it has been paid.

Maybe tomorrow?

Ninja Edit:

Just logged into my debitize account and there is a notification there that they have scheduled a payment on the 28th.

Update as promised.

It's Friday, and it worked!

Credit card is down to $0.00 again. I think I'll let this one ride. I have Capital One as the credit card I use all the time - 2% going towards travel which I like to do so I keep it - and that card DOES have a feature that lets you automatically pay off your credit card each month. That's cool also, but this program pays it off as you use it. Seem to combine a few days/ a weeks worth and puts them together as one payment.

So in conclusion - if you keep great track of your expenses and can do a monthly pay off, either just do it yourself or have the credit card company do it.

If you're trying to learn how to be better at spending, this program really forces you to think about what you have on hand as it makes you think before using a credit card which regretfully for most of us has become mindless spending and then wondering how we're going to pay for it at the end of each month.

I'll give it a semi thumbs up. Not perfect, but not bad either.

Final ruling...

Do Not Use Debitize.

They've changed their structure. Apparently all my good feeling for it was during their early testing phases when I had all the features.

They're newest update outright sucks.

The basic version pays only once a month. Hell, I can do that. They still take the money out of your bank account immediately. At least this way you won't spend it. But then they sit on it. So you see less at your bank, and your credit card total go up.

Of course you can have it done weekly if you pay $1.99 monthly.

Capital One credit cards have the feature built into them so you can choose to have them automatically pay off your credit card monthly.

So in short:

Just pay off your credit card as you use it - do it immediately. Most cards have apps so you can get the points and still pay off the card the next day. Do that, and you'll be fine. Don't have the money right now? Just wait a few days. We get sucked into impulse buys. Wait a few days. If you still want it that badly, then buy it. Usually though, we find that as a few days go by so doesn't our excitement for the said product.
