I really liked Opeth's older heavy stuff. 'When' and 'Ghost of Perdition' are among my favorites. Their newer stuff reminds me a lot of a heavier Dream Theater. Not necessarily a bad thing, but usually not what I'm looking for.

Hmm... those are 2 of my favorite bands. I don't hear DT in their newer stuff as much as (to me) they now sound like some of the dorky 70's prog stuff like Yes and Gentle Giant. DT are more 'Arena prog'. Can't wait for Opeth's new record Sorceress on the 30th. Sounds killer so far.

Yea, the new Opeth is good, but different. Really 70's vibe and less black metal. They're probably my favorite band, with my favorite album being Blackwater Park. Some of the other bands I listen to, but may not be especially like Opeth, are:

Gojira
Cynic
Devin Townsend/Strapping Young Lad
Sikth
Shokran
Scar Symmetry
Darkest Hour
Soilwork
Wretched
The Faceless

I could go on for a few pages, but those are searchable on Youtube and whatnot.

Yeah, I'd consider Blackwater Park to be one of the best metal albums of all time. Funnily enough, I haven't really listened to anything else from them. I tried listening to their new stuff but I couldn't get into it.

Also, tasty list. Saw Sikth live with Periphery (like I said in the OP) and they were killer. Can't believe their guitarist is touring with a Blackmachine though, haha.

Razrbakk, I've wanted to get into Devin Townsend for a while, but I have not idea where to start. Any recommendations?

Speaking of getting into, yesterday I finally checked out Fallujah. Pretty killer stuff.

Yea, the new Devin Townsend, it's awesome in my opinion. A good mix of theatrics and heaviness, with lots of trademark DT melodic parts. Kinda reminds me of a mix between Epicloud and Ziltoid the Omniscient albums.

Sikth is so slept on, I still can't believe they're not more well known.
Oh yea....

Porcupine Tree is amazing as well, kind of like the more melodic Opeth material.

If you're looking to check out some other Opeth try the Roundhouse Tapes album, it's live and sounds decent, with a good sampling of a lot of their more energetic and interesting stuff.

THIS. PT are killer, as well as frontman Steven Wilson's solo stuff. Apparently PT are now dead.

I just got back from a Devin Townsend/Between the Buried and Me concert, opened by Fallujah. Best $25 I've spent.

The show was amazing, but it was so poorly booked. The venue was a warehouse, and is actually a nice place for shows with less... scope, as it were. For bands like the DTP and BTBAM, which have this huge sound, it was garbage. The bass washed everything out, you couldn't even hear the vocals or lead guitar work, and the kiddies on the sound board had no idea how to mix for that place. But still, I'm a huge Devin Townsend fan, so it was amazing.
