Audiophile Help!

I am going on a long trip with a 4, 2, and 1 year old tomorrow. I got a DVD for my laptop, and I bought a "Speaker and Headphone Splitter" by Belkin. I am testing it tonight, and it has a very strange effect on the audio! It seems to split the type of audio being sent to the headphones. Each pair of headphones is getting way too much back ground noises and music.

I am using a mac book with two pairs of headphones that came from iphones. Does anyone know a fix for this?

Ok. I just figured out how to turn off stereo on my laptop. That seems to have solved the crisis.
