They might be snobby, but they at least usually smell better.

All too true. Hippies only think it counts when you're directing peace and love toward them. The other groups see their music as catharsis (goths might just be apathetic toward anything), and I've personally witnessed a pair of punks in a moshpit get into a shoving match, go face-to-face, and the first intelligible thing I heard from one was the most angry "I'M SORRY ABOUT MY ELBOWS, I WASN'T PAYING ATTENTION. LET ME GET YOU SOME ICE AND BUY YOU ANOTHER DRINK."
Oh, they'll yell in your face, but at least it starts as an attempt to get to their point.

My actual favorite story from that is from my friend Maja. She went to go see Amon Amarth, wearing her favorite Tool shirt--and matching hijab.
From up front someone goes. "Hey! Yeah, YOU!" and it turns out to be a pair of hulking, bearded men staring at her. Who immediately follow with "You see their last tour? C'mon up here, we've got a great spot. Oh, and don't order from the grill, they cook bacon next to everything."

You need a bro at a show, you find yourself some metalheads.
