a good field would have reliable rentals that don't crap out and ruin your day. i'd rent on the first day like they said.

and don't worry about the pain. you get used to it quickly. just go have fun.

also, people are making a big deal about the pain. It can hurt if you get shot in certain spots (groin, head, lower back, neck) Everywhere else, its like someone flicks you with a rubber band. It will sting for about a minute, then go away.

As far as gear for scenarios and woodsball. Starting off, old army fatigues (you see a lot of people doing it, theres a reason for it). Its cheap, its effective.

Yes, go out and try it a few times to see if you like it before diving in. If you do, follow afformentioned tips. Your gun isnt the most important, its your gear.

Yeah, I would say about %70 of the people on this sure are avid pumpers including myself. Don't play pump on your first day. You'll be discouraged. Find the love for the sport first, then play pump. People who play pump are generaly the people who have the most love and honor for the sport and it's roots. The crowd that just likes overshooting don't care for paintball at all IMHO. They just like hurting people and making them leave the sport.

I would say the pain issue won't arise if you are moving and getting that adrenaline up. You will know you're hit though. The only times it hurts (for me) are when I get overshot and later that night after playing. There are a few select spots that also always hurt when hit. For me, they are the back of the hand and top of the dome. So I dress accordingly to mitigate the pain if hit there.

I usually run an old tshirt for headgear, doubles as a headband for keeping sweat out of my face and cushions the hits. I was lit up saturday and didn't feel any of the head hits.

PPE is your friend.

I'm in your area, sent you a PM

preferably, everything you wear should be stuff you would be fine with never wearing again

generally the paint doesn't stain and you can get the smell out, but you have to wash it the second you get back from the field... and some paint doesn't like to was out properly >_>

Very well put, Duece. The pain will be there. You'll feel it. When your adrenaline is up and your constantly moving and you're surrounded, it's gonna hurt a lot less than if you're just sitting behind a huge can waiting for the game to stop and someone sneaks around and nails you.

If you go and help out at a local field every weekend you'll become friends with the regulars. Some fields let you work for credit and since you'd be friends with regulars they might let you borrow their gun to try out before you buy. Its a good way to get started.
