I see no difference in my ability to hit things with a rental 98 or Ego/DM etc. Sure you can improve your consistency slightly...but that honestly doesn't translate into a whole lot of real world difference. We're talking negligible improvements at a cost of $100+. Consider that before diving in.

If you want accuracy, the CP barrel is all you'll need. Keep the barrel clean, keep your bolt chamber clean and don't use crappy paintballs.

Don't spend any money on your gun. Buy the best quality field paint, and practice. I can bring a $1500 electro-uber-gun and not be able to hit my own foot with it using crappy seconds paint. No point in sinking a bunch of money in a 98 if you're stuck using dubious quality paint that will vary in size and quality every time you hit the field.

Your 98 with the CP barrel will be just fine. Use the money you would have otherwise spent upgrading it to get out and play more. That will not only be more fun, but you'll get better at all the paintball skills that make you a more effective player. The 98 is a great marker as it is. Don't get trapped into putting money into it that you could otherwise use to play.

Edit: Mayvik beat me to it...

Do you mean TNT in Victoria? If so, the field paint there is above average in my opinion. The Bronze grade is fine, and in fact you'd probably want to stick with it rather than gold/silver just because it doesn't break in the gun so much.

buy a gun you'll like.
Use it.
if you can't hit him the first time... fyre, fyre again!

but seriously a tighter barrel will do you good.

Read Cockerpunk's sig. It is truth. I've used the same ancient mag with the same tank for 3 years. Same 8.5 inch barrel, kept it chrono'd at 268, and I've yet to see something someone else can hit that I cannot.
