Basic photo editing software

Hello Guys,

My wife is starting to get into photography and wants to do some basic editing on some photos. Like changing colors, making photos black and white, clean up some photos. As you can see I am clueless with this stuff. What is a good software for her to use she is not super technical but knows enough to get by? She also needs a new laptop so should I just get her a MacBook or get her a windows PC and some nice software?

Thank you

It's really hard to beat the $9.99 a month deal from Adobe for both Lightroom and Photoshop. That said, if she doesn't have any prior knowledge of either, they both have a steep learning curve. I know there are some freeware editing softwares out there, though the names escape me.

As for a laptop, you'll spend less money on a PC based laptop then you will a MacBook (he types from a MacBook) for a comparable machine. Apple really pissed me off when recently (another thread for another time) and my home computer is now a PC. I still use an iMac at work and a MacBook pro when I'm away, but I was able to get more machine for less money by going PC. This will allow more money for equipment.
