i can understand the logic of stopping production of the NES mini in the name of the switch. they need the machines and the manpower to keep up with the demand, but, this time around, that cant be used as an excuse

and the fact that they don't make extra money from the scalpers and gougers should be a reason to try and reign in their supplies to please their customers, hell make it so the only way to pre order one is directly through nintendo, and only one per address..

this shouldn't be rocket science

Perhaps they straight-up don't care about the scalpers. And/or perhaps this is their way of testing their market(s) further. I mean, after the commercial failure of the Wii U I'd be leery of overproducing a piece of hardware that people may or may not want. They design & produce for Japan first, the rest of the world is pretty much secondary. Perhaps they were trying to re-gauge worldwide interest in their products?

No it shouldn't, but Nintendo has a habit of doing things in funny/dumb ways. Have you seen their answer for in-game chat for Splatoon 2? Kinda ridiculous.

Nope.

Effectively, you're buying the games - not a system. If Nintendo were to release an HDMI capable NES or SNES, then the only way you could buy games for it would be on the used market (which doesn't benefit Nintendo). These mini systems are a more or less fan service and a quick cash grab. It would be nice if you could download games to them. But then they'd be stepping on their own toes since they want people to buy the Switch. If you want a modern NES or SNES, you're better off looking at 3rd party clone systems like the Retro USB AVS, Retron 5 and other similar systems. Or you can do what I did and build a RetroPie system.
