I've been playing destiny 2 with onboard graphics beacuse my rx470 crapped itself and I sent it out to be repaired. I can't believe that it actually runs.

this talk about 144hz monitors. There's really a noticeable difference? I'm askingbeause when I bought my GPU last year, I decided that it wasn't going to cost effective to try to get 4k graphics, and I stuck with 1080. Should I be looking into a 144hz monitor, instead of pursuing 4k, first?

I also noticed that when you get into high range monitors, you end up having to buy a graphics card brand to match it (g-sync, f-sync) I'm nto sure I want to be locked into a specific brand, as my monitor will surely outlast any gpu that I own.

I have never had a 144hz panel, but I would rather have a responsive fast hz screen than a 4k. That lateral refresh rate will make a big visual difference especially if it is using a sync technology as well.

4K is great, but that generally means a bigger screen, and you don't want a big screen with a slow refresh rate. It magnifies the slow refresh (looks worse to us humans) and can make you feel sick.

If you want a middle ground, go for 1440p with decent refresh. Don't forget, to make use of 144hz, you are going to need a GREAT gpu to drive it, and you may even have to lower settings to keep the frame rate up.

I've got an rx470 8g card. It should work well with 144hz, I think

If you notice fluorescent lights flickering when other can't, then you'd be able to notice a difference.
Most normal Humans can't notice a difference above 60hz. That's why the highest refresh rates back in the day only went up to 75hz.

Newer 4k TVs have a much lower response time/input lag than before <80ms and atleast offer a gaming mode <30ms. You won't get nothing below 10ms yet.

There are 4k monitors that do have <10ms. Like the Asus 32".
Again it won't be necessary unless you have superhuman godlike reaction speed and want to play competitively against other godlike beings.

Find a rich friend with a good setup first to see if you notice a difference.
I for one know I play "casually" and am ever so slightly colorblind, so I don't need to pay a premium for "Quantum" LED with 10 jillion color range or 0.1ms response time, but I do want to watch 4k movies in my room.

IDK about f-sync or g-sync maybe someone else will chime in on that. I do know that v-sync is suppose to keep your screen and game refreshing at the same rates so there's no screen "tearing".

And if anyone has experience with virtual surround sound headphones vs 5.1/7.1 surround sound systems, I'd love to hear about it.

I myself notice the flicker of fluorescent lights, to the point that it sometimes makes me sick to my stomach when I go to Walmart. I still feel that is well besides the point when it comes to refresh rates and PC online gaming.

If you have been using a 60hz monitor for online gaming, and only a 60hz monitor, you WILL DEFINITELY notice a difference, both in reaction time, and with eye relief. YBBPI is entitled to his opinion (and you know what they say about opinions?), but it is one of the most noticeable upgrades you can do to a gaming rig. I was a naysayer at one point, mostly because I felt my 1440 60hz HP was still a sufficient monitor for what I wanted to be doing - I WAS DEAD WRONG.

4K is all great for cinema, but gaming hasn't gotten there yet because of the crazy amount of VRAM needed for 4K resolution in gaming. It's getting there, but when the GPU to run what you want costs more than the remainder of the build, it seems silly to strive for 4K.

But, like YBBPI, that is my opinion.

I've learned a ton in the course of my PC building. 144hz monitors are getting cheap (my AOC was $169.99), which means they are more within the reach of the casual gamer. Previous gen GPUs are cheap too. My visual upgrade just cost me over $300, but the improvement to my gaming because of those upgrades make everything else seem moot.

Upgrade to 144hz. Trust me.

It's certainly not a "beast" but it's a heavy hitter.

8G of VRAM at 60hz is a caged beast. Let that thing loose. Seriously, there is no reason not to.
