What exactly is Steam?

I have always heard people throwing Steam around but never looked into it, now that I have I still don't really understand it.

I think it is just an program that you install on your PC and you can play games with it right?

essentially its like a "portal" or "hub" where you can
-browse and download games (technically you just buy a license to play, you don't actually own the game through steam)
-communicate with and manage online friends
-host stuff through their own message boards, like discussions, mods for your games, and artwork
-a limited digital marketplace for items within games

people talk about it because if you consider yourself a PC gamer you probably have steam installed, unless you only play like one game and its not on there. even if you have mac or linux you can play games through steam. there are constant rotating deals but the biggest sales are in summer and winter, and you really can make out like a bandit.

there are a few critics but in general people like steam, they really do try to listen to their audience and deliver.

Steam was originally a game design studio that has expanded over the years to create an online service to allow the digital purchase and download of PC games. Kinda like the Amazon of downloaded PC games. It makes it quite easy to shop for and install games, it automatically keeps your games up to date for you, and keeps track of your whole library so you can install your games on any computer you log into your Steam account from. Steam also has a chat client that lets you make / communicate with / keep track of gamer friends.

Steam is what happens when an industry needs a way to ensure digital rights management.

Yep.

However, now companies are all starting their own versions of steam. I hear that EPIC launcher is going in hard now, offering developers more money per sale, then steam is offering.

Honestly. I play single play exclusively so for me GOG is a better deal.

The only downside I find to Steam is it seems, at least with my limited IQ, that when someone else has a sale that makes expansions or DLC worht the investment, it seams like if you bought the game through Steam you need to get the extras through them.

I have games through them and like them. The community means nothing to me though. You know, cause I'm anti-social.

My favourite game on Steam, other than the Half-life series, is Goat Simulator. Not worth the full price because there's only 2 levels, but when it's on sale, it's hella fun.

If given the option to buy a game on Steam or on GOG, I'll typically choose GOG. Steam uses DRM on all of their games whereas GOG does not. This means that you can install in on as many computers as you want and you can save the installer for future use. So, in the case of GOG, you actually own the game. The down side is that GOG doesn't have a library as large as Steam does.
