Found out today that I need a kidney transplant...

Long story, short version - I've been a Type 1 diabetic since the age of 3, and 35 years of insulin dependent diabetes has finally caught up with me. After some recent lab work, some extremely elevated createnin levels, my kidney Dr informed me today that I need to start dialysis immediately and get on a list for a kidney transplant. There is a positive twist though. When a diabetic gets a kidney transplant, they also do a pancreas transplant, which eliminates the diabetes, making a much more successful kidney transplant.

I will then no longer be an insulin dependent diabetic.

I'm still kind of in shock over the whole revelation. Dialysis is nasty, but I guess we'll see how bad it is when I go get educated about it all tomorrow. The thought of not being diabetic anymore is very surreal.

You understand that dialysis is a horror, and being on a transplant list doesn't just mean you are getting a new kidney, right?

One of my good friends died while on dialysis, waiting on a kidney. I hope you are looking at this with the seriousness it entails. This isn't some free ride off diabetes,

Good luck and hope you get a match quickly.

He could be just looking at the positives of a hard situation. Maybe ease back a bit, yeah?

Sounds like a really tough road you have ahead, but you absolutely have the right attitude about it.
Don't let downers like punkncat get into your head.

From my understanding, dialysis is a bit rough on your body. My grandfather needed it twice a week or more, whenever I went to pick him up he was always exhausted. Take it easy afterwards and eat well, you should be no worse off then someone donating double red blood cells.

I suggest bring an audiobook or something to listen to during the procedure.

Much luck to ya buddy! I bet having this option to be insulin free is a wondrous thing, hope you get your new parts soon!

I didn't ask for you to come piss in my Cheerios, so please, in the kindest of ways, **** off. If you don't think I've had to run this nightmare through my head over and over the last five hours or so, you are sorely mistaken.

I have to try and make light of this and be positive, and I'm currently doing the best I can, so if you don't have anything positive to say, don't say anything. Period.

Sorry to hear the news, but you definitely sound like you are staying strong and keeping your head pretty clear through all of this. Remember to keep your chin up and reach out to anyone that will help you through, which I would assume is most anyone on here(minus one of us most likely).

Take care, and if you need anything at all then I will gladly offer with any help that I can. You’ve been fun to chat with over the past couple of years!
